Having just spent a week in New York over spring break with several teachers from my building, the subject of the origin of the expression "The Big Apple" came up. A history teacher tells me the story she has always heard is that during the depression years many people owed their existence to selling apples on the street corners, and that is how the name came to be. I'd be interested to hear any other versions of the background of the phrase. Wanda Duff Northwest High School Omaha, Nebraska wduff@edu.unl.edu
