Just another thought about inventory. I have done away with so many
clerical-type tasks as we move into the 21st century, but inventory is
not one of them. I agree with Penny that we need to make information
available and know that we have those items if they are on our
circulation system.
I have, however, modified inventory in many ways. Every year we do
reference materials (and yes, we have a portable scanner, so it takes
little time). We alternate other areas and do them during the year.
Close to Christmas we usually will do a section and again in the spring.
We continue doing this and will get through the entire collection every
year or so. It's been made so much easier with electronic scanning. I
can't imagine anyone "not doing it for years and years" unless there are
armed guards at the entrance, etc.
