Could the book you are looking for be called _A Cast of Killers_ by
sidney D.Kirkpatrick, Penguin Bks, 1986. It has the character, King
Vidor, who is making a movie of an old colleague and he begins a search
for the truth about the murder case which the police closed in 1922 with no
arrests. Forty years later King vidor solves it and tells no one. It is a
great book, a real page turner with photos in the center. Hope this helps.
