Please consider flexible schedule for all...all year...all the time. Do creative cooperative planning with your teachers to develop information skills units (retrieving, sorting, comparing, evaluating, using in a project, paper or other product, etc., etc.), along with thematic cross curricular units. It's wonderful...heady, even! The kids love it. So do the teachers, if they ever do it & get used to it! Even some of the librarians do....;-) Skills are demand probably are the only skills the kids are going to remember. Research on demand puts the responsibility on the children to find what they need...NOW! You can watch the excitement, the learning, the cooperation among kids. I cannot even remember (and probably have never known) when such things were "invented," but I do remember a book I bought ages ago that mentioned it....and the copyright date was 1968!!!!!! Perhaps it's time...? This is one of my passions! One of my favorite areas. It can work if the library media specialist believes in it & is an evangelist for it. The very best of luck to you.
