I guess the teachers and I have been trying to get students to do some "higher order thinking" by searching every resource that we have that would pertain to the subject *themselves*. I can certainly see the value, however, of being able to hand a pathfinder to students who stall and plead they "don't understand" in order to get library workers to find the material FOR them. It's always amazing to me to find a junior or senior (not so surprising in freshmen and sophomores) who will come straight to me to ask where a book on ..... is instead of just keying the word into the electronic catalog first and finding the *exact* location of the book! Basically, a pathfinder is on a specific topic and briefly states the scope of the subject. In addition to a few key resources in the library publishing the pathfinder, appropriate subject headings (which can be used in all libraries) are listed along with appropriate subject headings for periodical indices. Appropriate "see" and "see also" references are also included. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Terry Young, M.Ed., M.L.S.
