Dear Friends: Actually, The Giver is pretty popular in my public library and has been enjoyed by my students as well. In fact, I just booktalked it to the sixth grade a couple of weeks ago and both of my copies were checked out immediately. This week one of my sixth graders said, "This is a really good book." Others had already read it and agreed with her. Several had already read The Midwife's Apprentice and liked that, too. However, our sixth graders might be a little older overall than in some other schools, since they must be six by August 1st to start in first grade. Speaking of the "target group," actually the Newbery is awarded for outstanding literature designed to appeal to children up to age 14, and I certainly feel that The Giver falls in that age group. Just my two cents.
