My suspicion is that for those adults who are already library users, who
know the librarians can find *anything*, the library will continue to be
the main source for information. However, small and large businesses
alike now hire
Information Professionals to gather needed information for them. Large
corporations
have always had corporate libraries, which now include these IP's
who inhabit the electronic world. Information professionals sell their
services, but their clients can expect special attention, and presumably,
they have a limited number of clients. Libraries have, potentially, an
unlimited clientele, and let's face it, just so many hours in the day.
If librarians can keep up, I think there will always be a place for us.
We, too, can give special services, but because we're "free" to the
public,
they often don't expect much, or understand what we can offer them.
Businesses don't want to stand in line behind the forty kids who are
checking out books after storytime.
