Target: Rolling Stone -- Our Turn

I've been so pleased over the years that our district has
experienced few challenges. We also have a well defined
reconsideration policy in place that has been used when
those few challenges hit us.

Then this week two principals in our district decided to
pull Rolling Stone from their library shelves without
using the reconsideration form and without respect
for district policy. One has stated that he "never
uses" the policy; he just pulls whatever anyone objects
to. The other, who has met with many objections from
students, has simply told them the school ran out of
money and can't afford it any longer (the subscription
is paid in full thru the rest of the year).

We are now in the market for information on the
use of Rolling Stone in school library media centers.
I know others here have been through this before
us. We'd appreciate any pointers or experiences
you may have to share.

We have no district specialist or supervisor
any longer. The four of us who remain to serve the
buildings have decided the area specialist will
offer the principals a copy of the reconsideration
form to fill out and submit. If that does not
prove effective, we will request an audience
with our (new) deputy superintendent asking
that policy be followed. We've also contacted
another principal to suggest that review of
our policy on intellectual freedom be a topic
at an upcoming principals' meeting (many new
principals in the district tho the two in
question are not new). We've also contacted
ALA.

Beyond that... who knows.
