Oh my gosh, I just remembered Beany Malone!  Happy Birthday, Dear Beany.
The Secret Life of Beany Malone.  And those books by Janet Lambert -
something about girls who had brothers at West Point.  Seems like the main
character was the little sister who always had to tag along, then in one
book she "grew up" and had a boyfriend at West point, too.

I, too, loved the Marguerite Henry books.  i also read some of the
Kjelgaard books.  I still have to read Ramona the Pest every once in a
while to help me remember what it's like inside a kid's mind.  My friends
and I all read the John R. Tunis sports books, too.  I think we read them
more than the boys did.

I also loved the Betsy, Betsy and Billy, Eddie, etc., books by Carolyn
Haywood.
