Hi LM_NETters!
Gosh, this is one of my favorite topics.  Piers Anthony, Anne Macaffrey,
Patricia Wrede, Jody Lynn Nye, Christopher Stasheff, Jane Yolen, Andre
Norton, Terry Pratchet, Diana Wynn Jones, Diane Duane.  If you are not
familiar with these names, please check into them.  They are all significant
authors and would be excellent additions to a school library.  Since I like
to laugh when I read, most of these individuals have a great sense of humor
that comes through in their work.

Some write for the adult market as well.  Piers Anthony's "Magic of Xanth"
series is excellent for a middle school, but I believe his "Bio of a Space
Tyrant" series would be asking for challenges.  Jane Yolen's "Pit Dragon"
trilogy has be a favorite of mine for years.  Anne Macaffrey's Pern dragons
have been wildly successful and probably don't need me mentioning them.
Patricia Wrede's "Enchanted Forest Chronicles" that start off with "Dealing
With Dragons" is a particular pleasure because she starts with the princess
who does NOT want to meet Prince Charming, and decides to take up
housekeeping with a dragon instead.  How she deals with the princes who keep
trying to rescue her is a delight.  Andre Norton is the Grande Dame of the
sci-fi, fantasy field.  Her Witch World series is a masterpiece in a prolific
career.  Christopher Stasheff walks the line between sci-fi and fantasy.  I
don't know if he's ever made a decision which he prefers.  His Warlock and
Sons are wonderful reading.  Terry Pratchett and Diana Wynn Jones are from
Great Britain, and they have taken a while to build up a following here in
the states.  He writes the wildly funny Disc World series, and she writes
books similar to the Harry Potter books.

Those are the authors that came immediately to mind.  If I didn't have a
paper to finish for my Reference class, I would go check my bookcases and
give you more names!  :-)  Marcy
