Popeye the sailor--according to the World encyclopedia of cartoons--was a character in E.C. Segar's cartoon strip Thimble Theater (b. Jan., 1929)...the first Fleischer Bros. movie cartoon was released July 14, 1933, as part of its Betty Boop ser...his bearded rival was "Bluto"...the encyc goes on to state that once the Fleischer's left the Famous Studios the series went downhill and became "repetitive and witless"....(I agree)...Brutus must have been a television revision...addition.
