My middle school is going to be have a reading period for all students next year, in addition to their regular English class. This means that math and science teachers will be teaching reading. Part of the program, in addition to SSR, will be reading out loud to students. I have been asked to recommend novels with a scientific basis for teachers to read out loud. Teachers are especially interested in titles which would reinforce the curriculum. I have a few ideas, among which are Jean Craighead George's books, Scott O'Dell's The Black Pearl, Paulsen's The Voyage of the Frog, Hesse's Phoenix Rising, Farmer's The Ear, the Eye and The Arm, and Skurzynski's new National Park series. What else can you recommend? TIA!
