Why must all of the books be checked in the day after returning from the
Christmas holiday? If you are on a fixed schedule, let the students return
the books the day they usually come to the library. If you are on a
flexible schedule, work with your teachers to schedule return times so the
books don't all come back at the same time or let the students bring only
one or two books back at a time.

During my book fair I allowed the students to check out an extra book since,
because of space, they literally couldn't get to the books during the fair.
Yes, on Monday and Tuesday I had quite a few books to check in and shelve
(and I am automated) and the clerk was not there but it still wasn't a
problem. I plan to let the students check out an extra book during
Christmas after reading all of your messages. The students want to read and
cannot get to the public library.

One hint about reshelving -- have a book truck for returned books and don't
be in a hurry to reshelve. You'll be surprised how many of those books go
out again and you won't have to shelve them.

Another suggestion -- if you are not automated and are overwhelmed by the
number of books being returned, let some responsible older students or
parent volunteers help out.
