I have been reading all of the messages about holiday check-out and have
to comment. I have been a media specialist for 18 years and never once did
it even cross my mind not to let students check out books over the holiday
vacation. This is a time when many can read because their parents work,
it is too cold to go outside, etc. I have never had a book lost over the
holiday checkout either. As for all of the books to return and shelve, I
have no more than I normally have. My students are on a fixed schedule and
return books on their assigned day. I am trying something new this year
and have had great success. This will only work if you are not too worried
about things being perfect (I am far fram this at the moment). I am
automated, but I think it would work if I wasn't too. I have the students
return their books on the computer as they enter the library, they then
shelve their books. If they were able to find the book on the shelf by
using the shelf labels and call number then they should lso be able to
return it. The first graders love it - as they check out their book they
tell me what shelf they found it on, when they return their book they tell
me again. I find a few books out of place, but the time it has saved me
has been very useful for other things. I sid this would have worked when I
before I was automated because I had the books card their own books, this
would have just been an extention from that.If anyone wants to know more
about this just send me an e-mail.
