LMNETTERS: I had a few replies in my request about how to price each item in a collection. Thanks to you all that answered. I am going to take the criteria of current replacement cost. I have to take several criteria here to put replacement cost price, because most of our books do not have a price. 1. Time criteria 2. Peruvian or foreign books. Peruvian books current replacement book cost is much cheaper thatn foreign books. 3. For Latin America current replacement cost plus an estimated shipping cost 4. For all comercial (known publishing houses) an estimate of $20.00 per book. 5. For journals I do not have and estimate price yet. My original request was this... >>> Now, since we have our inventory in december what I want are some guidelines on pricing each item. In Tarea we do have prices on many of the books we buy, but most of the publications in our collection are obtained through interchange of Tareas publications with other institutions (NGOs, Universities, etc). Is there any paper or information where I can get the criteria to use in establishing a price for each item?>>>>>> Here are the answers I may not be following established protocol, but I would suggest using the current replacement cost. If you were to buy the titles now, how much would they cost? There is an average cost for fiction and for non-fiction books in the Dewey categories. I know science books are more expensive than most of the other non-fiction categories. Reference books are in still another price range. I guess you could look at several titles on say amazon.com or follett titlewave or permabound, etc. and use the average cost. ............................................................... I use Baker & Taylor [online] and Follet's catalog for pricing items that do not have a price. If I still cannot find a price- -then, paperback readers==$5, paperback nonfiction==$8, hardback reader==$8, hardback nonfiction $20, reference paperback==$10, reference hardback thin==$20,reference hardback thick==$35-50[judgement call].. .......................................................... We use Books-in-Print to determine pricing because if we lose the book, that is what it will cost to replace. For those items that are not in BIP, we value our books at approximately $25.00- --an average price of a book. Again, we focus on repalcement costs---a book that was donated or bought for a low price may have to be replaced at a much higher cost. ****************************************************************** Gustavo von Bischoffshausen (gustavo@tarea.org.pe) Servicios de Informacion Tarea, Asociacion de Publicaciones Educativas Lima, PERU PC/WINDOWS95, Netscape Communicator, Pegasus Mail para Windows ****************************************************************** En la literatura tanto como en el amor, siempre nos sorprenden las elecciones de los y las otr@s (sic) Andre Maurois =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
