Brenda...
I agree with the others...PowerPoint should be used and presented as a tool that
meets a need. I see too many teachers in my District who use technology just to
use it! I feel before any technology is integrated into the curriculum, a
"problem" should exist. The teacher should ask him/herself...have I presented a
lesson in the past that could be improved through the use of technology? Will the
use of technology encourage higher level thinking skills...moving away from the
"knowledge level" of Bloom's taxonomy to analyzing, evaluating, and synthesizing
levels? I feel it is very important to first establish a problem and then use
technology as a solution to that problem. Why not show your teachers how using
PowerPoint can be used as a tool to solve a problem? Identify a problem that you
have encountered, and show how developing a PP will solve that problem. For
example, your Vo-Tech school wants to get the word out as to the goal of the school
and the many programs available. However, the expense to bring all 9th graders for
an actual visit would be too costly and too disruptive to the vo-tech school.
Traditional brochures and speeches by guidance counselors do little for students.
To many of them, it's just another lecture..just another piece of paper which
probably will never be read or taken home. A PowerPoint presentation would solve
this problem. It could be used as part of a presentation with handout notes given
to a classroom teacher to use in his/her classroom or even posted on the District's
server for parents to access from home. The presentation could include info about
each shop with pics from that shop or even incorporate video in the presentation.
This way, PowerPoint has taken a problem and solved it.
I would also suggest that you read Jamie McKenzie's article, Scoring Power Points,
available on the Web at http://emifyes.iserver.net/fromnow/sept00/powerpoints.html
I feel the way you present the use of PowerPoint to your teachers will have a great
impact on how they use it in their classroom.
Good luck!
Judy
