Hi, Jan! =20
In Louisiana, one must be a certified teacher in order to earn a secondar=
y certification as a school librarian. Only one student in my SLIS class=
es at LSU this past year was not a certified teacher, and although she ea=
rned her MLS, she must obtain her teacher's certification in order to be =
hired. Our school system will employ a teacher working towards an MLS as=
a school librarian before they will hire someone with an MLS, but no tea=
ching certification. I don't know that teachers who become librarians ar=
e taken more seriously, but hopefully we understand both sides (library a=
nd classroom). I began my library studies as a result of a desire to mak=
e a "mid-life" change, as well as a desire to have a life--grading, plann=
ing, etc. were taking a toll. I soon discovered how much work a good SLM=
S does. Unfortunately, at my high school, we did not have good librarian=
s who put in that time, so I never realized how much energy and effort ar=
e involved in doing the job right. Now that I have my certification, how=
ever, our school system has decided to eliminate many library positions b=
ecause the principals felt that library positions were more dispensable. =
There are librarians (such as those at my school) who do not make themse=
lves noticed and essential to the school--and that has repercussions for =
the rest of us who do. =20

Is it my imagination or are there LOTS more posts these days from current
classroom teachers working towards library degrees? Is this due to the
increasing number of library openings out there, or has this always been =
the
case and I've just never noticed it? I had a former colleague once tell =
me
that "Of course, librarians who are originally classroom teachers are tak=
en
more seriously than those who are not!" I've always been bothered by tha=
t
remark. Just pondering, I guess, and would welcome your comments...
