I've gone a step farther and do not even help kids with copy/paste unless
it is absolutely necessary due to time constraints etc.     We require them
to take notes. For the most part it really is working and the teachers
support it.   Many teachers do not allow any printing.  We have note taking
forms in the media center and they are well used.  (color coded; pink for
the online encyclopedia  etc)  My favorite note taking form is one a
teacher has created on tiny pieces of paper.

Your situation sounds like a good opportunity to  work with a student
teacher.  As an adjunct college instructor in addition to being a media
specialist I'm well aware that college students do not have a good
foundation in research or ways to teach note taking etc etc.  They are
tehcnically skilled, but not knowledgeable in integration (which the class
I teach is all about).  But, I've had many, many wonderful opportunities to
work with student teachers and hopefully work towards avoiding situations
such as the one you described. Basically they aware not aware of the
problems and a better way to do things.
