Hello Elaine,

I don't have any figures to quote but having used both, the infrared
mice (I don't think they use lasers) are much, much better.

First of all, it has no moving parts. In a school setting you gotta'
love that. Even if you have devised a cost effective method for
quickly cleaning mouse innards, it still requires time and effort -
most likely your time and effort. I'm sure there are better things
you could be doing.

Secondly, they will work on virtually any surface - without the need
for a mouse pad

Finally, they are almost maintenance free.

Add in the fact that they are very smooth and precise to use and
there is really no argument, except perhaps one - price. For brand
name mice such as Microsoft or Logitech the infrared mice are usually
not much more expensive then a similar mechanical mouse. What I have
yet to see is a really cheap infrared mouse to compare with the no
name, bargain basement mechanical mice that some schools often
favour. They may be available. I just haven't found them - yet.

Hope this helps.
