I don't want to criticize or upset anyone, but both the original
assignment mentioned here and the web site suggested would create a
major problem at my school. We have a number of Arabic students and I
checked a few of their names. Most were not there. And imagine this for
the large number of black students who have beautiful, but original
names. Maybe the assignment could be expanded to having the student
write about his/her name with or without doing research and even
creating a meaning for it if he/she desires. Or have the student write
about his ethnic background as he perceives it.
Just a thought. Things may be different at your school
