Is AR a Godsend or another point on the Axis of Evil?
Does it lift students to new heights of achievement or kill the joy of
reading?

These questions, and many others, will NOT be answered at the California
School Library Association conference next week.

However, if you would like to hear how other librarians are dealing with
the reality of AR in secondary schools then I recommend "Accelerated
Reader: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" on Thursday at 1:00pm. It will be
a panel discussion of AR issues, particularly those that affect the
library. Light on philosophy and heavy on nuts and bolts.

The panel:
Nancy Matz, Tulare Union High School, Tulare-
Gale Hodur, Soledad Unified School District, Soledad-
Kathleen Gallardo, Lincoln High School, San Francisco-
Jean Campbell, Foothill Farms Junior High, Sacramento-
Kathy McLaughlin, Challenger MIddle School, San Diego-
and myself
