Blair and all,

As a former NYPL librarian, I think that I can answer your
question about their ability to select a list of best books of the
year

before the end of the year.. The NYPL gets
advance review copies of all the soon-to-be-published children's books.
Childrens

librarians in the system (over 88 branch libraries and several specialized
libraries ) read
and review these books. All librarians

get to make purchasing decisions on a
regular schedule using the actual books with the reviews attached. It is a
wonderful system

similar to purchasing books in
Barnes Noble but with the aide of a helpful review.

These reviewers also advise the committee which selects the
100 Best books of the year. The list is unveiled annually at the Anne Carroll

Moore lecture in the Fall. This event is one of the highlights
of the children's book publishing world in NYC.
