Sorry that your Lt. Governor had such an unfortunate education. I can tell
you plainly that when I was in high school and junior high school we read and
wrote quite a bit. I remember a couple of extremely demanding teachers who
required critical analysis (we had to write them) of works such as "The
Bear," "Daisy Miller," "The Scarlet Letter," "Animal Farm," "Of Mice and Men"
and other American classics. We also read Shakespeare - quite a bit in fact
-- "Romeo & Juliet," "Julius Caesar," "A Midsummer Night's Comedy" and
"Hamlet." I think your Lt. Gov. should not generalize all Florida education
just because her own was lacking. Currently in this school district, the
Superintendent challenges all students (and teachers also) to read 25 books
each year. These cannot be textbooks or books the teacher reads aloud -- but
books the students reads. A lot of detail has been put into the challenge
which rewards students with certificates and other goodies such as "What
constitutes a book?" It has been determined that a book is at least 150 pages
of writing. Rest assured, students in Florida have always and will continue
to read and write. By the way, why would your Lt. Gov. choose to make such
disparaging remarks about our state? No more orange juice for her!
