Ms. Waugh,
As an African American and an educator, I am indeed offended at your
idea . Obviously there was and and is a need for the celebration or
there wouldn't be a Black History Month. For many years the history and
accomplishments of African Americans has not been shared with students
in schools. African Americans were left out of books, out of the media
(print and nont-print) and generally treated as if we were not
significant contributors to the American culture. The purpose of Black
History month is to celebrate the accomplishments and history of African
Americans. Why would you want to change Black History month to something
else? Black History month is not about other ethnic groups it is about
African Americans. There are months for recognizing other ethnic groups:
September 15-October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month; November - Native
American Heritage Month.

Hopefully you will save your idea for another month. By the way, Black
History Month is not a concept!
