WAY 2: Have folders/envelopes with barcodes and circulate various magazines using the 10-20 barcoded holders. POSITIVE: Fewer barcodes used; little waste. NEGATIVE: You don't know exactly what's out or what was lost. (Granted, you probably won't replace the mag anyway) I use a variation of this: When I scan in the barcode on the envelope, the system doesn't recognize it because it was never entered in a permanent record. It asks "create a record?" Choose "temp" and at least on Follett you can then enter a brief title and dates. When the envelope comes back, you check it in and that temp record is destroyed. If it doesn't come back, the system gives all that info on overdues.We keep about 10-15 envelopes going, and the kids have been very good at getting them back.
