Like Jo , I have also forgiven students in certain situations (at the
end of the year, when its obvious the book isnt going to show up) . I
have a chat with them - let them know I understand or am aware of their
special circumstances, and see if we can brainstorm ideas for next year
to let them borrow , but without the worry about losing a book (i.e.
keeping it in the classroom - signing out under teachers name, etc).
This year we have had several children living in an emergency intake
shelter (i.e. removed from their home, but not yet placed in a foster
home), these children have already been yanked from their
homes/schools, and may only be with us for a few weeks, or up to a full
school year. I generally allow those kids one book at a time, since I
am aware of their situation when the child is enrolled. We also had a
family who lost their apartment, moved to a homeless shelter and is now
in transitional housing (or maybe it's a "family" homeless shelter).
These students are the ones who are struggling to show up to school
each day, often without homework, or a good breakfast.
