Ann:
Tinyurl is one of many services that will allow the user to shorten a long
(any length) url into just a few letters/numbers. It's useful if you want
to share a long url over the phone or in an email because they often will
not open properly.
Here's an example:
A url for an article, from the Toronto Star.
http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1080041663539&call_pageid=968332188492&col=968793972154
Simply paste in into Tinyurl.com and you get:
http://tinyurl.com/2xklj
Clicking here will take you to the Toronto Star article.
