I looked at the web site. It reminds me of music lyrics sites - many have been shut down. People are posting these scripts without authorization. Because they make their own transcription of the script (they don't make a copy from a lawful copy; they watch the movie over and over again and write down the script by hand), I think they believe that there is no copyright infringement. Well, it is still an unauthorized copy and if the rights holder cared enough, they could make a claim for copyright infringement. (My assumption is that Disney would care...) The site also says "don't make a copy of these scripts." So I think these script transcribers feel like further copying of the copy they transcribe is an infringement. If you want to use a script, you should buy it. Unfortunately, some scripts are not available for sale. A public performance of a dramatic literary work (like lion king) - even in the school setting- requires prior authorization. A performance of a dramatic work in the classroom is excused. I do not know if the purchase of dramatic literary scripts come with public performance rights - as you know, you can buy videos with public performance rights by paying a higher purchase price. I am not sure if there is a clearinghouse that one can go to obtain public performance rights for scripts. Maybe other subscribers could shed some light on this. If there isn't a clearinghouse, one would have to go directly to the rights holder for permission. Good Luck! --Carrie Russell Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2005 06:31:57 -0800 From: Cyndi Phillip <cphillip_56@YAHOO.COM> Subject: TARGET: Copyright Question I am seeking the collective wisdom of the LMNet list. A drama teacher wants to use a script from www.lionking.org/scripts for her classes. The production will later become a public performance at the school. This site has scripts that are rewrites based on the Disney original. But the site does not indicate that any permission has been granted from Disney. The school principal is questioning the teachers use of these scripts for her classroom and/or performance. Thanks for your help on this.
