I hardily agree! We use Junior Library Guild and get GREAT fiction
selections. When I see a title really take off we can purchase multiple
paperback copies very quickly to meet the demand. We also cover our
paperbacks. We easily get at least 15 circulations and often many more from
our paperbacks.

Not only our students but our younger teachers (they're all younger than me
now) seem to prefer the paperbacks. They don't seem at all reluctant to
pick up a dog-eared paperback and leave the better looking hardcover.

I agree with Jan...I buy paperback fiction and circulating non-fiction
when possible. We cover them with Kapco rigid plastic covers and use
fiberglass tape on the hinges to help them last longer. My experience with
teenagers is that they'd rather checkout paperbacks than
hardcovers...perhaps it's something to do with the weight of their
backpacks these days. I prefer paperbacks for another reason -- my current
schools have quite a bit of population turn over and I'd rather lose a
$5.00 paperback than an $18.00 library bound hardcover when a student
moves. When I'm buying reference, I go for the hardcover, though.

Well, that's my two bits for today, :)
