When I started working on my Masters I had the wonderful opportunity of
working at a branch of the NY Public Library (children's dept) as a trainee.
After a brief introductory period, I started undertaking many of the tasks
of a fully certified librarian . After 9, 18 and 27 credits, I received pay
raises and more duties. Once I got the degree (36 credits), I was hired as a
regular librarian. The on-the-job training was invaluable.

However I decided to become a school librarian in NYC and needed to take a
test to become certified in that system. This was in 1971 and I don't know
if they still use the test.

When I got my score I discovered that it was one of the highest for that
test. I am convinced that I did so well because many of the questions
related to the a children's library. Many of my library school friends who
were classroom teachers didn't do as well as I did because they didn't have
the practical knowledge.
