I have purchased an authorised CD game of Scrabble 2005, mostly for my own entertainment but also with the possibility of buying it for my students. But I keep getting beaten by the in-built players using words that I am sure are not real, or are misspelt. For instance, what is a lezz, a div,a mu, whens and visiter? It is as though the program has been programmed to accept an 's', 'd' or 'er' on everything. Yet other perfectly legitimate words like lexile are rejected. It also appears that people's names are accepted but not countries, months and other proper nouns. Maybe it is that Joe and Jane and Anna have other everyday meanings. If this is frustrating me, then you can be sure the students would be even moreso. What I would like to know is if there is an online dictionary that not only gives the allowable Scrabble words but also their meanings. The Scrabble dictionary is included in the software but it only has the words - I am a strange biddy who wants to know the meaning of a a word before I use it. Then, if I do buy the software for the school we can list all these bizarre words and their meanings as part of our learning. At the same time, does anyone know of a software version of Scrabble Junior version that might be more suitable. Any help gratefully received - this remains such a popular game with our students that we have a Round Robin tournament each term.
