Dana:
We circulate only the current month of the magazines we subscribe to. We
catalog the title of the magazine and give it a single barcode. Mags are
placed in a flexible mag cover (Demco) that has a pocket on the front and a
card (w/barcode). After school, kids rush in to check out mags and serial
comic books--they sign the card and leave it with us and we check it out to
them after the buses leave. We decided to barcode the title only so we could
keep track of the statistics for check-out. This helps us determine if we
should reorder the magazine or even order extra copies if we have the money.
(It also adds to our circ stats--if they are reading it--I'm counting it!)
Mags and Comics are for overnight check-out and are due back before school
starts the next day. I have only had 2 kids out of 1400 lose this privilege
for a semester (they get one "I forgot" excuse before they lose it). We do
not check to see if the kid has an overdue book or has reached their
limit--we consider the mags/comics as a separate service we offer the kids.
At the end of each marking period I give away the mags/comics for the past
month.
This is the first year we tried magazine check-outs and we are very pleased!
I only wish I could find more age-appropriate girl magazines for middle
school.
Hope this helps!

Subject: [LM_NET] TAR: How do you check out magazines?

I am wondering about the different ways LMS check out magazines. Some
catalog them all and check out like a book, others use the primitive method
of signing out a magazine on a sheet of paper, some use the card method just
for magazines...I would like to know what any of you do and why. For
example, if you catalog them, why do you feel this is best. If you use a
different method, please describe it and why you like it. I am trying to
find the best method for me. Thanks all.
