On that note, I have to respond too.....new bookstore just opened in our neighborhood and the owners weren't familiar with all of their content when they first opened. However, I spent about two hours browsing their collection as they were still assembling shelves in the back and completing their "decorating." Just as I was beginning to wonder if I would be the only customer in their new store, a new customer came in. The owner walked over to ask her if he could help and she asked if he had any books about the paranormal. He was a bit confused and turned to look at me (as we had talked earlier about my "day job" as a librarian). Because I knew he had no clue what she was talking about, I whispered...."ghosts"...and then I said, "Oh, I think there are some over there...." pointing to the location where I "imagined" the 100's would be in a library. She found her book and then said, "Do you have any James Patterson novels?" The owner then looked at me again, and I said, "Yes, the latest one is over there...," pointing to the "fiction" area. After her two purchases (and all the positive comments about the store, the discounts given, and the "wonderful service from the staff..." ---she thought I worked there), the customer left and the owner said..."I know you work full time in a school library, but would you consider working here in the summer? I think you know more about our store than we do...and you've only been here two hours!" Needless to say, I'm always visiting the store and will always help a customer to locate a book or share a "book talk" with someone who is interested. This is really SO much fun to do at any book store, but really fun when there's managerial support! ~Shonda -- Shonda Brisco, MLIS District Librarian Peaster ISD Weatherford, TX 76086 Currently reading: "Tested: One American School Struggles to Make the Grade" by Linda Perlstein Digital Bookends wiki / blog: http://digitalbookends.pbwiki.com http://shonda.edublogs.org/ sbrisco@gmail.com Resources for Texas School Librarians: http://txschoollibrarians.ning.com/ http://txschoollibrarians.wikispaces.com/ "Digital Resources" columnist School Library Journal -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
