A friend of mine (former librarian - maybe in a reform-type school) said she used to have the "shop class" students drill small holes through the spine edge of the pages, then sew the pages ala the old style --- and then cover the stitches with ...something... to make a new spine. It always seemed like way too much trouble to me, but some of those high-interest books don't come in a better format.
