My "target" question was; I was shelving books and stopped to look at the blurb about Sky so close by Betool Khedairi and it got me to thinking about some other titles involving a clash of cultures. I would like to do a book display of similar titles. So I am looking for similar titles. I >don't want "multi-cultural" so much as examples where the main characters are in a clash of cultures. If you have any ideas (secondary level) I will gladly post a hit. Here are the responses ( now if I just have enough of these titles to make a good display) One comes to my mind right away: Kira Kira The newest Printz award winner would be a great example! Gene Yang's, American Chinese. Ask Me No Questions - Told from the perspective of two high scool girls whose illegal immigrant parents from Bangladesh are arrested and detained after the Sept.11 attacks. Children of the River - a Cambodian refugee girl struggles to integrate into her American high school while the genocide in Cambodia continues. How about House of Sand and Fog? It's an adult book, but a great one for this topic. I'm not familiar with the book you mentioned, however I believe "Blood Red Horse" by K. M. Grant would work for you. One main character is a boy joining the Crusades and traveling to the Middle East. Another main character is a Muslim boy fighting to protect his homeland. Have you seen the movie Freedom Writers yet? That shows the clashes that take place in the streets as well as the c lassroom. Here are a few titles from our collection: Danger Zone by David Klass Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Houston Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd Naughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman Children of the River by Linda Crew Eyes of the Emperor by Graham Salisbury Red Scarf Girl by Ji-li Jiang Under the Blood Red Sun by Graham Salisbury Romiette and Julio by Sharon Draper Ties That Bind, Ties That Break by Lensy Manioka Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac Deborah Stafford Gen.
