I don't believe what I am reading. Fine people? Nonsense!! I hope we never get to
that position - and who would monitor it anyway?
The practices we do now have been developed over the years as just that -
practices. There are no wrongs or rights. And practice can be changed. Let us not
get into the theological debate the Churches get into when discussing tradition.
It is not written in stone that we must use the first letters of an author's
name...many do..many do not. When I taught Cataloging at the Graduate level I
insisted that people do what makes sense. It is a system not a law.
Do what works in your library....patrons will adjust. I have not used the first 3
letters for an author in over 30 years - and so far no one has become confused.
What is confusing, however, is the demand for the 3 letters or other practices that
may or not work for a particular library.

Just a little bit extreme, don't you think? We aren't the same as doctors and
lawyers. As hard as it is to admit, our issues are not anywhere near as vital. It's
difficult to decide where to draw the line between flexibility and consistency.
However, if we are too rigid, or make our materials too hard to access out of
respect for Mr. Dewey, we have done a disservice to our patrons.
