I watched that report, and while I have no problem with e-books, I find
one thing the Superintendent said highly suspicious. He claimed that
they could save $129 per textbook by getting the books electronically
("Why pay $130 for a textbook when we can get it on disk for $1?") I
can't imagine a typical (for example) history book that can even begin
to pay the royalties on the images in the book at that cost. The
majority of the images in a typical textbook are licensed images from
places such as the Bettmann Archive or Getty Images. In addition, the
publishing company is going to have to pay royalties to the half dozen
or so authors of the book. Most textbook publishers don't indicate
prices on their textbooks since each negotiates with individual states
or districts. However, if this district was getting the book at $1 (is
that $1 per student, $1 per copy????) it may be a promotional rate that
the publisher is using to promote this new format.
