I think as Information Literacy specialists, we do need to have a discussion about ways to promote safe and responsible use of the internet and computers in general. I do, however, feel that having a discussion about this particular case and about who is to blame is not appropriate for this listserv. We should focus on what we as professionals will do to help ensure students' safety while using the internet, not what the parents in this particular case should have done. I think it's going down the wrong path to discuss the particular case and details of the case because it does not fall into our professional arena to discuss how parents should protect their children. If LM_NET is not an appropriate forum to discuss this serious issue, what is? Each day those of us who encounter young adults in our libraries are faced with situations where we must encourage responsible, informed use of information sources (including MySpace, blogs, wikis, etc). The Lori Drew case is an extreme example at the the far end of the spectrum that illustrates that information illiteracy can very often lead to risky behavior with tragic outcomes.
