LM_NET Archive

Hi, Jason.
And congratulations on joining the wonderful profession of teacher
librarian.
The question you pose has been asked over and over again recently. I guess
the prof gave the same question to every student in the class (which
probably isn't the best pedagogical practice). I know that by now that there
are some responses in the LM_NET archive (see the link below) because a
couple responses have gone to the whole list. I know this isn't your problem
but you might let your prof know that this, IMHO, isn't an appropriate use
of the list.

If you have a question, it should be your question, not the professor's. And
rather than telling us that you are a student just ask the question. We get
all sorts of "interesting" questions on the list and someone out there might
just be able to answer. My particular favorites have to do with MARC records
and cataloging but we've got experts on all sorts of topics so don't be
afraid to just ask.

In my library I do one thing which might partially address the question you
are asking but it doesn't have anything to do with grade level. I have a
separate collection of books for special needs students and I use abridged
Dewey to catalog those. For the main collection I use full Dewey numbers.

Once again, my criticism is not of you but of the professor who gave the
assignment. Good luck on your completing the program and becoming one of us!
