Answers.com is correct...When checking into the book, it is stated that "Within a 
short time she as walking briskly toward the Emerald City, her silver shoes 
tinkling merrily on the hard, yellow roadbed." - The wonderful wizard of oz by L. 
Frank Baum copyrighted 1987, page 33.  Don' t know if that helps or not.  I haven't 
read why they were silver or why the movie has red but there it was in print.

I have only heard of the ruby red slippers.  I don't have a copy of the
book, but can anyone give me a clue as to why there is conflict in
information (beside the response that answers.com was wrong).
