Answers.com is correct...When checking into the book, it is stated that "Within a short time she as walking briskly toward the Emerald City, her silver shoes tinkling merrily on the hard, yellow roadbed." - The wonderful wizard of oz by L. Frank Baum copyrighted 1987, page 33. Don' t know if that helps or not. I haven't read why they were silver or why the movie has red but there it was in print.
