Hello, I'm finding this thread absolutely fascinating! I asked a few of my library regulars about what they thought about Facebook friending with teachers. In the interest of full disclosure, here, I have a Facebook account so I can peek around out of interest, but I'm not a regular Facebooker at all. Interestingly, according to my students, none of the kids has asked to friend a teacher. When they ask a teacher to friend them it isn't so much for "professional interaction." [Our students all get a school e-mail account and we run Moodle] They want to "hang out." According to the kids I've talked to, the teachers at my school won't friend them. Informal conversation with teachers around the lunch table indicate that most of the teachers who are regular Facebookers don't want to friend kids. When I asked them if we should start an institutional Facebook page for our library, their most common reaction amounted to [with a laugh] "Ewww .. Why? ... Just keep putting it on the library Libguide page. We know where it is ... Leave us alone on Facebook, Mr. Wee!" [then they mocked me for having no friends of my own ... :-) ] It has made me realize that every school and every library and every teacher/librarian is going to have a situation and school culture unique to them. My kids, it seems, largely fall into the camp that sees the institutional Facebook concept as a "creepy treehouse." dave Dave Wee, Librarian Harvard-Westlake Middle School 700 North Faring Road Los Angeles, California 90077 Phone -- (310) 288-3270 E-mail -- dwee @ hw dot com "You see, I don't believe that libraries should be drab places where people sit in silence, and that's been the main reason for our policy of employing wild animals as librarians." ~~ Monty Python ~~ ----------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
