Jaclyn--

I solve this problem by setting up displays in such a way that students can check
out the books, because I know that they will want to check them out! Anything
highlighted in any manner seems to fly out the door! You said that you had some
similar titles to point students to--perhaps these could replace the ones that
students check out? If you have a routine display, such as horror books at
Halloween or romance books at Valentine's Day, perhaps you could keep some lists
that would facilitate the replacement of checked-out books in the display so that
it takes up less of your time. If you have multiple copies of books, perhaps you
could have a small stash of replacement books that you pull when you pull the
original books for the display, so that you can put them out. If you have a locked
display case, maybe you can put some artwork or props in there that is related to
the theme of your display and then have the display of books on an open shelf
somewhere
nearby so that you don't have to go into the display cases to retrieve them.

I'm just trying to suggest some ways to facilitate students checking our your
display books because it seems that it's causing some negative interactions with
students, and the cost of those interactions can sometimes be pretty high. Maybe
others have some additional ideas about how to solve this problem.

Subject: Vent: Students wanting books from the display

Hello -

This really isn't what I wanted to talk about first thing Monday morning, but I
just had maybe the fourth student come up and ask me if they could take out the
books in the display case. I politley told them they couldn't, as I wouldn't have
much of a display left, until the end of the month, but that I would be happy to
find them a book like it in the library. Not one of them took me up on the offer
and all were grumpy. I spent a lot of time making the display case and just don't
have time to keep gathering books to fill it every time it empties! I guess I'm
glad they saw it anyway...
