Darla, I lost square footage last year, but happily I have regained it this
year. Long story, but I "archived" things last year. I put lots of items that
were housed with professional teacher materials, and this included movies, into
a corner that I couldn't access during the year. Now, I am moving things back
to their original placements. I looked at all those items that were unavailable
last year. 80% of those things are now boxed to leave. I really did have to
dig into that corner twice last year because I put 2 items back that were still
regularly used.

I'm phasing out movies in this way. I'm replacing those that I can with DVD,
but for those not available on DVD I'm telling teachers who use them to look for
other options. I think in another 2 years I'll have no more VHS.

I'm appalled at purchasing practices within my district and yet library funds
are cut. Then again since 2000 thousands of dollars of materials have become
obsolete. It has been gut wrenching to toss things out, but by now I'm getting
pretty good at it.

Subject: Has VHS died

Good evening,

I am in the enviable/unenviable position of completely rebuilding my library.
We got new carpet over the summer and everything was boxed up before I left and
I am now boxing it up.

Because this is a district resource center, I have a lot of movies. I started
five years ago only purchasing dvd movies. I lost about 300 square feet with
moves into the library of other programs, I am now contemplating deleting all of
the vhs movies to make room for other material. As I am unpacking boxes, I
asked my supervisor about this. His response is that he felt I would be asked
to get rid of the videos soon. I am now in the process of shelving the dvds and
leaving the vhs in the boxes, but I thought I would get some more input.

If you have any thoughts on this matter, I would love to hear them.

Thanks in advance,

Darla
