Yes there will be those kids who try to spend the time socializing but in my experience it is about age group- 3rd and 4th graders have the least amount of time browsing...more than half the period is a lesson. Yes I preselect for the very young. That said, the kids know that library class rules are the same as other subjects. Attention, participation and appropriate behavior. If they are not actively looking for a book, checking out a book or recommending a book, they are sitting quietly reading or sharing a book. third and fourth grade have the option of writing as well as reading or making cartoons. If I catch a kid doing none of those, they become my helpers to reshelve and prep for another class.
