Even more responses: I would praise the lord!!! Now I give my district my summer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------- In my school district, secondary librarians go 16 days more than the classroom teacher...10 before teachers report and 6 after they leave. Works out fine but sure shortens summer break. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------ Well, that's what I am on and I would NOT recommend it as I wind up donating a lot of time to the district in order to get my job done. I wish at least my tech was 11 months! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------- Our head librarians and librarians who work alone are on a 10 month contract. It is wonderful to be able to stay open until the end of school and be ready to go when school opens. We must inventory the collection each year, including all equipment and do stats. Most of us are the technology person (by default) also, and this takes enormous amounts of time. In working with curriculum the extra time gives you an opportunity to actually read the mail, try new software, explore curriculum sites for your faculty, plan meetings with them, do bibliographiesfor them, clean & do small maintenance on equipment, catch up on filing periodicals, ordering, cataloging, and cleaning!!! It is a wonderful time to catch up and plan ahead and inform your faculty and be of real service to your principals and faculty. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------- I would be interested in the comments you received. I would also like to know the outcome of this. One argument for a 10 month contract would be that you could do inventory during the summer and keep the library open frfrom beginning of year until the end. Many other librarian duties could be done during this month leaving the school year to serve classes and students. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------- Our librarians are on an 11 month contract (207 days) and love it. They have a week to prepare for the arrival of teachers and have some staff development before everyone else arrives. At the end of the year the library remains open until the last day of school. Inventory is done after school is out. Of course they are sometimes asked by principals to do some non-library duties during these times just because they are there and no one else is, but, overall, it works out very satisfactorily. Our rationale for the longer contract is student and faculty service. We can't serve students and faculty members if the library is closed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------ Will post any more responses received.
