In response to JJ Towler's post re Junk Mail, I offer the following: First, I'm not a spammer. I respect your professionalism and your time. Also, I'm not the guy who called, but I may be someone who would consider sending you a piece of unsolicited marketing mail, so I'm interested in your opinion(s). We live in an ever more complex and expanding universe which includes not only more and more people, but more and more information. If it is the attitude of a library specialist to segregate between known suppliers and to ignore any others, then how is it possible for the library media specialist to become aware of worthwhile new works offered by anyone other than his/her old standbys? Granted, we all lead busy lives and time is certainly at a premium. I know that I screen phone calls and toss out the obviously irrelevant junk mail that lands on my desk, but I do remain open enough to reviewing unsolicited mail which offers at least to bring me news of something new which MAY BE of interest. As librarians, don't you have an obligation to be on the lookout for quality programs, for interesting alternative points of view, or for materials which might be of interest for select readers/viewers/listeners/players, etc. As a producer of educational media, I am profoundly interested in your points of view on this because if JJ's view prevails within your profession, then it's just the luck of the draw that determines the quality of programs, books and materials which wind up on your shelves.
