AMEN, Ken! Same for southeast Texas (around Houston) where I grew up.
And I just checked with my husband who grew up in Hot Springs, Ark and
Erwin, Tenn. He doesn't remember where he first learned the "practice"
but was aware of it at an early age.

I would hazard the guess that perhaps it is more related to _when_ than
where we grew up - but our students still do it, so that's out.
