All of this thread ties in with children being "phonemically aware"....a rather intangible sort of thing that BEST taught through playful listening games (nursery rhymes and other kinds of rhyming games like "I'm thinking of something that a bridge crosses and it rhymes with CAKE". as well as constant exposure to good literature. Children who struggle with reading are the LEAST phonemically aware and the ability to hear rhymes is one of the first indicators that they are becoming developing phonemic awareness. And remember, phonemic awareness is NOT to be confused with phonics instruction! So, get out all your rhyming books and HAVE FUN with those little bitties!
