Coincidental to gathering LMNET responses I did a periodical search on Proquest searching "schools" AND "IBM" AND "Macintosh." Interestingly, I didn't find anything recent but a Nov./Dec '98 issue of MULTIMEDIA SCHOOLS reported a Dun & Bradstreet survey which indicated that " Apple continues as the brand choice in elementary schools while PC's predominate among senior high schools." I did get some helpful responses from LMNetters on utilization. The dominant response was that there are no longer super-great advantages/disadvantages of one over the other. In fact, a number of librarians argued for having both types of hardware in the school's labs. Macs (software) did seem to "have an edge" in graphic design, desktop publishing and video editing. Within schools that had both Macs and IBM's it was reported that Macs "had better long term maintenance"--fewer problems. On the IBM plus-side was the definite impression that library automation software was largely designed for use with IBM's and that most automated programs continue to run better on IBM's even if the software is now cross-platform. One final point from my own reading. Macs are much more scarce in the workplace (except for graphic applications) and the home market and according to one article I read, parents report "it's just more convenient if kids come home and pop their school disks into our PC's."
