I need to put a plug in for the 'dumbing down' of books.=20 In my prior librarian life, I was a library media specialist at a K-8 = school. I didn't have a huge budget(believe it or not) and so I had to = make decisions on what types of material I could get that could cover such = a wide span in interest and readability levels. I had found that having = some of these lower level nonfiction books were a real boon to my older = students. The books I ordered had the index, glossary, table of contents, = so they were helpful to the older reader. If a teacher was trying to find = materials for the older student who read at a lower reading level, I could = provide them with materials. I also found that teaching the research = process using these types of materials was extremely helpful. The = 'content' didn't get in the way of the process. I, of course, didn't rely = exclusively on these lower level books, but they were very useful, = especially for my K-8 situation. This then presents the problem that the only "acceptable" books in the library are those aimed at an adult (or at least college age) reader, which is above the heads of some of the students. It certainly makes research almost impossible for many of the ESL students = and the 8/9/10 graders. It's a pity that some publisher somewhere doesn't take note of this and start publishing books that are quality non-fiction. They'd make a mint!
